The 2022 G20 summit will be held in Bali, Indonesia. As the gateway for G20 participants, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali made numerous preparations to support the event. How is the preparation going? Look at the discussion below.
But, first and foremost, let us discuss the G20.
Do you understand what the G20 is yet?
The G20 is a forum for multilateral cooperation comprised of 19 major countries and the European Union. South Africa, the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Russia, France, China, and Turkey are among the 19 members.
The G20 was formed in 1999 following the unification of the G7, and it embraced both developed and developing countries to work together to overcome crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America. The G20 aims for strong, balanced, sustainable, and inclusive global growth.
Initially, the G20 was a Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting. However, the G20 presented Heads of State at a summit in 2008, and a discussion in the development sector was formed in 2010. Since then, the G20 has been divided into the Finance Track and the Sherpa Track.
The theme of the 2022 G20 Presidency of Indonesia is “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.” With this theme, Indonesia wishes to invite the entire world to assist and support one another in order to recover, grow stronger, and be sustainable.
Revitalization of Bali Airport’s VVIP Terminal for G20 Summit
To welcome the 2022 G20 Presidency of Indonesia, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali revitalized several areas of the airport, particularly the VVIP terminal, which included the beautification of the existing VVIP terminal covering an area of 1,063 square meters, construction of a new VVIP terminal covering an area of 1,000 square meters, landscaping arrangements, and a new service road covering an area of 3,250 meters.
This terminal serves as an aircraft parking lot as well as a meeting place for high-ranking state officials participating in Indonesia’s G20 presidency. It is hoped that this revitalization will improve transportation services and have a positive impact on Indonesia as the host of the 2022 G20 Presidency.
With a modern Balinese design concept, the VVIP terminal was revitalized. Shades of white with a hint of Balinese local wisdom. The VVIP terminal is designed in the style of traditional Balinese architecture known as Wantilan. Wantilan is a structure that serves as a gathering point for Balinese indigenous people.
Bali is the preferred venue for international events
In addition to the 2022 G20 Presidency, the 2018 International Monetary Fund (IMF) event was also held in Bali. I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is also preparing for the IMF event by developing the airside and landside areas.
The land side development of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport includes a car parking building with a capacity of 1,615 vehicle slots, as well as expanding and increasing check-in counters at the international terminal from 96 units with an area of 2,740 m2 to 126 units with an area of 4,420 m2.
Meanwhile, runway extension and apron expansion are underway on the air side. The runway and apron expansions are intended to accommodate large foreign aircraft. As a result, the runway capacity was increased from 30 to 33 flights, and the apron capacity was increased from 53 to 63 parking stands. The number of rapid exit taxiways has also increased from two to three.
The IMF’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport expansion project includes the construction of a drainage channel between the apron and the taxiway. The drainage channel is then closed with cast iron gratings to ensure that nothing falls into it. The cast iron gratings also function as a bridge over the drainage canal.
Airport gratings include heavy-duty class drainage components that can withstand heavy loads. This is necessary to ensure that the airport gratings do not break when an airplane passes overhead. For installation, these airport gratings are installed in a row along the airport’s drainage channel.
