Cast Iron Deck Drain: Specification, Types, and Tips on Choosing The Right Deck Drain

Cast iron deck drains are drainage components used to drain water from the surface to the main drainage canal. This component is used on bridges, flyovers, and toll roads (freeways). Using a deck drain prevents puddles by quickly directing water from the road surface into the main drainage canal.

Cast Iron Deck Drain Specification

1. Design

A set of deck drains consisting of a body, a top cover, and a middle filter cover. The top of the body is rectangular and the bottom is pipe-shaped. The top cover is used to cover the body part, so it has the same rectangular shape. On this cover, there are holes that use as the water entrance to the deck drain.

The middle filter is in the body that is between the top and the pipe-shaped part. It is used to prevent garbage or dirt from entering the pipelines. If the garbage or dirt gets into the pipeline, it can cause a blockage so the water can not flow smoothly.

2. Material

Deck drains are made from cast iron (gray iron) materials through a metal casting process. Cast iron is a material that has good strength and endurance. So that the cast iron deck drain can withstand heavy loads and be able to withstand outdoor weather changes.

a. Standard Type

Type 1

Deck drain type 1 has a straight-shaped pipe.

Type 2

Deck drain type 2 is a deck drain with a crooked pipe section.

b. Medium Type

A medium-type deck drain has the same shape as the standard type 1, but smaller.

How to Choose the Right Deck Drains for Projects?

1. Adjust the size with the water discharge

Each flyover and toll road has a different stretch. Also, have different roadways. A flyover with a larger stretch and more roadways will accommodate more water discharge. This water discharge should have flowed with an appropriate deck drain. The bigger the water discharge, the bigger and more deck drain that used.

For large water discharge, you should use a standard-type deck drain. This type of deck drain is designed for the use of large water discharge. For small water discharge, you can use the medium type of deck drain. This type of deck drain has a smaller size than the standard type.

2. Choose a safe design

It deals with the caution of theft. Many contractors complained that the deck drain cover was missing overnight after the installation. Installing a deck drain cover without a protector could invite theft intention and letting this deck drain cover to take. For the safety of this deck drain, the cover must be drilled tap on the body so it is fused and not easily detached.

3. Use Zinc Chromate Finishing for Corrosive Areas

Flyover and toll roads that are near the sea have an atmosphere with higher acidity than the roads in the middle of the city. Using zinc chromate finishing can reduce the corrosion characteristic of cast iron. When using ordinary painting for iron, the deck drain will quickly erode corrosion so that it can disrupt the drainage process on the flyover or toll road. This is because the corrosion is double that from the water flows and the surrounding atmosphere with high acidity.
