What is grating?

Cast iron grating is a drainage component made from cast iron through a foundry or metal casting process. It is used to cover open drains in and around homes and buildings, allowing people to safely cross the drains without falling in.

Cast Iron Grating Design

A grating has a rectangular design with elongated holes, which serve the function of allowing water to flow directly to the drains.

Gratings do not have a frame, so they are installed directly on a concrete foundation. Bolts can be used to reinforce the grating installation on the concrete foundation. This prevents the grating from shaking when the vehicle pass.

The grating size is customized to fit the drain being installed, so there is no standard size due to variations in drain sizes.

1. Medium Duty

Medium-duty gratings are designed to withstand low to moderate loads, such as motorcycles, family cars, and light freight cars. They are typically used for drains in residential areas, offices, hotels, apartments, and other locations where heavy loads are not common.”

2. Heavy Duty

Heavy-duty grating is designed to withstand heavy loads such as those from container trucks and airplanes. This type of grating is commonly made from ductile iron material (FCD). Ductile iron has high ductility, so it is not easy to crack even when exposed to heavy loads.

Heavy-duty grating can also be made from cast iron (FC) but must be thicker than medium-duty grating.

While heavy-duty gratings are used in areas with heavy loads such as airports and power plants.

Cast Iron Grating Installation

Gratings are installed side by side along the drains. So one area requires more than one unit to cover the entire drains. The installation of gratings is paired directly with the concrete foundation of the drains. In the installation of gratings need to pay attention to several things to function the efficiency of gratings.

1. Notice the top of grating (a)

You have to install the top of the grating flat with the surrounding surface. It is intended that the loads can pass smoothly and without shock. Furthermore, an uneven installation of gratings can cause people to stumble and crash. So the flat installation of gratings can function for safety.

2. Notice the bottom of grating (b)

The bottom of the grating should stick perfectly on a concrete foundation. The concrete foundation must have the same width and height between the right and left sides. Besides that, you should make the concrete foundation as strong as possible to withstand the weight of the gratings and the load through it.

3. Notice the size of concrete foundation (c)

A concrete foundation should have a maximum width. That is if we can make a 10 cm width of a concrete foundation, then we just make this 10 cm width of a concrete foundation. And not recommended to make the minimum width of the concrete foundation.
