Grating is a component of the drainage cover which is an important part of the drainage system. The design is a rectangular bar with elongated holes. These holes function as a way for rainwater to enter the drainage channel so that it recedes quickly and does not cause puddles. Several things need to be considered regarding the design of this grating hole. What are they? Below is the complete discussion.
1. Infiltration Holes Size
The holes in the cast iron gratings function as an entrance or absorption of rainwater into the drainage channel so that there is no puddle or flood. In addition, these holes also function as filters so that garbage does not enter the drainage channel. If garbage enters the channel, it can cause the drainage channel to be blocked.
Given the importance of the function of infiltration holes in the grating, of course, it cannot be if the grating of the drain cover is not designed without infiltration holes. Therefore, we must make a grating for the drain cover with the right size of infiltration holes.
Generally, the grating infiltration holes of the drain cover measure 150 mm x 30 mm. This 30 mm width is the maximum recommended width for infiltration holes. If the size of the infiltration hole is larger than 30 mm, it is feared that it will be dangerous for cyclists because the wheels can enter the grating infiltration hole. However, if the size of the hole is too small, rainwater absorption becomes less than optimal and can cause puddles.
The size of the infiltration holes on the water channel cover grating can also be adjusted to the area of use. If the drain cover grating is used on the road passed by the bicycle, then the infiltration holes are smaller than the bicycle tire’s size. The grating for airports has a larger infiltration hole size because it adjusts its use area, which requires faster water absorption. In addition, the size of the infiltration hole is large enough will not harm the aircraft because the wheels are also big.
2. Infiltration Holes Design
In addition to adjusting the size of the water channel cover grating infiltration holes with passing vehicles, grating hole safety standards can also be met by making a safe grating infiltration hole design. The design of the grating infiltration hole of a safe drain cover is that the hole is designed horizontally or transversely so that it is not in the same direction as the speed of the vehicle’s wheels.
There is also a design for infiltration holes made diagonally or obliquely. This is a safe design because it is not in the same direction as the speed of bicycle tires. However, for the design of this diagonal infiltration hole, there must be additional reinforcement so that the grating of the drain cover is stronger.
3. Installation
Cast iron gratings are installed in rows along the drainage channel. In this installation, it must be tight between one grating and another grating. Do not let there be gaps between the gratings that can cause the rider to fall. Then tighten the grating with bolts so that it does not shake or shift.
Those are the three safety standards for the cast iron grating holes of the drain cover from Infiniferro. We made this safety standard based on our experience as a supplier of cast iron gratings for various projects in Indonesia. With this standard, it is expected that all road users and vehicles, including bicycles, will be safe when passing through the grating of drain covers.
