Did you know that the Jabodebek (Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Bekasi) Light Rapid Transit (LRT) was built in response to the severe traffic congestion in Jakarta? The Jabodebek LRT project aims to reduce congestion on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road and the Jagorawi Toll Road. There are some interesting facts about the Jabodebek LRT project that you should be aware of. The following is a comprehensive discussion of seven facts about the Jabodebek LRT.
1. It has three track lines
The Jabodebek LRT is divided into three lanes: Cawang-Cibubur, Cawang-Dukuh Atas, and Cawang Bekasi Timur. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) (Indonesia Railways Company) is the operator of the three tracks.
Using the Jabodebek LRT is expected to be faster for each of these routes. The Cibubur-Dukuh Atas route takes 39 minutes and the Bekasi Timur-Dukuh Atas route takes 45 minutes.
2. Rates range from Rp. 15,000 to Rp. 24,000.
Tariffs for the Jabodebek LRT will be progressive or determined by the distance traveled. The Jabodebek LRT has an average fare of IDR 15,000. With an IDR 5,000 short-distance fare. While the most distant or highest tariff is between IDR 22,000 and IDR 24,000. This tariff, however, has not been finalized or approved by the government.
Transportation Electronic Money Cards, Banking Electronic Money Cards, and various Digital Wallets can be used to pay for the Jabodebek LRT.
3. IDR 23 trillion in funds
IDR 23 trillion is required to build the Jabodebek LRT facilities and infrastructure. The station and depot’s construction alone will cost IDR 4.2 trillion.
State Equity Participation provided funds totaling IDR 1.3 trillion (PMN). Meanwhile, the remaining funds were obtained via syndicated bank loans from four state-owned banks: Bank Mandiri, BNI, North Sumatra Regional Development Bank, and Papua Regional Development Bank. The four banks have provided IDR 2.93 trillion in loans for constructing Jabodebek stations and the LRT.
4. Workers for the Jabodebek LRT are trained in Malaysia.
KAI is collaborating with Prasarana Berhad Malaysia to train crew for automatic railway facilities and the Jabodebek LRT’s automatic controller. Prasarana Berhad Malaysia was selected because it has operated automatic trains using the Grade of Automation (GoA) 3 system since 1998.
A total of 92 workers received theoretical training in Bandung before continuing to work in Malaysia. The training materials cover GoA3 infrastructure functions and methods, GoA3 signaling, the GoA3 operation rule book, implementing SOPs, and dealing with emergencies.
The Jabodebek LRT is well prepared for operation, beginning with qualified human resources (HR) and prioritizing safety.
5. Several difficulties are being encountered
Another fact about the Jabodebek LRT is that it has faced a variety of difficulties. The incorrect financing design, which becomes a burden for the company, is one of the difficulties in the construction of the Jabodebek LRT.
The Jabodebek LRT project was initiated in 2015 by a contractor company and the Ministry of Transportation. However, state-owned contractors had difficulty collecting payments in 2017. According to the Minister of Finance, the state budget does not allow for Rp 29.9 trillion to be spent on the Jabodebek LRT.
Aside from financial constraints, there are also challenges in terms of organizational readiness and HR competencies, which require time to become acquainted with the GoA3 system because it has never been used by train operators for the Jabodebek LRT.
6. The trial schedule has been restored
The Jabodebek LRT will be soft-launched on August 17, 2022, to coincide with Indonesia’s Independence Day. However, due to the aforementioned constraints, the Jabodebek LRT trial schedule has been pushed back to December 2022.
This is not the first time the trial schedule has been postponed. Initially, the government planned to launch the Jabodebek LRT trial in July 2022.
7. Use cast iron manhole covers
Every building, including Jabodebek LRT facilities or infrastructure such as stations and depots, must have drainage channels. There is a hole in the drainage channel for officers to use when cleaning and maintaining the channel. Cast iron manhole covers are then used to close the access hole.
The Jabodebek LRT project uses cast iron manhole covers consisting of:
- 1000X1000X70 mm medium duty cast iron manhole cover
- 1000X1000X70 mm heavy-duty cast iron manhole cover
- 1000X800X70 mm medium duty cast iron manhole cover
- 800X800X70 mm heavy-duty cast iron manhole cover
- 1200X1000X70 mm heavy-duty cast iron manhole cover
- 860X860X60 mm medium duty cast iron manhole cover
Those are seven facts about the Jabodebek LRT. The goal of this project is to create integrated mass transportation between the MRT, LRT, airport trains, and the Trans Jakarta Bus. As a result, travel becomes more efficient, and traffic jams are no longer necessary.
