Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) was built as a form of contribution in supporting economic growth, tourism, and air connectivity in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta. The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport has achieved 3 records from the Indonesian Record Museum. What are the records that YIA got? Here’s the discussion.
1. Fastest International Airport construction
The first record is the fastest construction of the International Airport. YIA construction took 19 months, from August 21, 2018, to March 29, 2020. During its construction, YIA recorded 16 million working hours without work accidents. Therefore, YIA received the Zero Accident Award for its achievements in implementing the Occupational Health and Safety Program.
Currently, YIA serves 2 international routes and 20 domestic routes. International routes are Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. YIA also has great potential to increase domestic routes, like Labuan Bajo, Manado, Kupang, as well as international routes, such as Melbourne, Sydney, Jeddah, Medina, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.
The operation of YIA is a solution to the problem of lack of capacity at Yogyakarta Adisutjipto Airport during the Covid-19 pandemic. YIA can implement the Covid-19 prevention health protocol through physical distancing more optimally than at Yogyakarta Adisutjipto Airport.
2. Construction of an airport with the most use of concrete
The Yogyakarta International Airport area stands on an area of 587 hectares in Temon District, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta Special Region. Hence, the construction of Yogyakarta International Airport requires concrete with a total volume of 750,000 cubic meters.
The passenger terminal building at YIA has an area of 219,000 square meters with other supporting buildings. Then on the airside, there are runways, taxiways, and aprons. The capacity of the YIA terminal building is able to accommodate up to 14 million passengers per year or 9 times that of Adistujipto International Airport.
3. Airport construction with fastest airside zone completion
The parts of the airport consist of 2 zones: land-side and air-side. The airside zone of YIA consists of a runway with a length of 3,250 meters, a width of 40 meters, and a shoulder of 15 meters on each side. This runway specification can accommodate large-bodied aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A380. Then, the apron section (aircraft parking zone) has a capacity of up to 23 parking stands.
The construction of the YIA air-side zone was completed within 8 months, starting from August 21, 2018, to April 26, 2019.
The construction of Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo adopts the philosophy of the feel and warmth of Yogyakarta. Then for the interior, they use design with the motifs of kawung, kori agung, wijaya kusuma flower, balekambang, and gunungan.
Those are the 3 records that Yogyakarta International Airport has achieved, cool right! So, don’t forget to visit Yogyakarta through YIA and see the records directly.
