Erick Thohir, Indonesia’s Minister of SOEs, has requested that airports be converted into art and cultural showcases. What do the Indonesian airports mean as an art and cultural showcase? Let’s take a look at the discussion below.
Indonesia has a diverse range of regional cultural arts that should be introduced to the wider community locally and internationally. Art and culture exhibitions or shows at airports are one way to introduce art and culture.
Because the airport serves as a meeting point for both domestic and foreign tourists, it is an ideal location for an art and cultural display case. This is also a form of recognition for regional artists and culturalists, as it creates jobs and raises the income of cultural arts performers.
The following Indonesian airports have hosted cultural arts performances
1. Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA)
Yogyakarta is a cultural city, so efforts to make Yogyakarta International Airport a cultural art showcase are critical to maintaining this status. Furthermore, to make Yogyakarta a more specialized field. To organize the arts and culture show, the YIA management collaborates with the Department of Culture.
YIA has evolved into a stage for artists and cultural figures. Every Saturday and Sunday at YIA, 72 villages in Yogyakarta take turns displaying their respective arts and culture such as dance, painting, sculpture, and batik.
On Saturday, May 21, 2022, Margoagung Village/Kalurahan Budaya Kapanewon Seyegan, Sleman Regency, for example, performed two dance groups, the Sayuk Rukun dance and the Lenggang Timur dance, with all young Margoagung residents participating.
2. Bali International Airport
Bali, like Yogyakarta, is well-known for its regional arts and culture. The Manager of Bali International Airport provides entertainment to service customers in the form of dance performances and traditional musical instruments to revitalize a visit to Bali.
The aviation industry and its derivatives are feeling the effects of the pandemic, which has a significant impact on the number of tourists visiting the island of Bali. Along with the increase in tourist arrivals, airport service and experience are being improved, one of which is by performing arts in collaboration with artists.
For example, in June 2022, Bali International Airport’s management presented Balinese dance performances in the arrival terminal area. The cultural arts performances were warmly received by airport visitors.
3. Jakarta International Airport
Jakarta International Airport (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) is the third airport that serves as a showcase for Indonesian cultural arts. Jakarta International Airport is Indonesia’s largest and busiest airport, making it an ideal location for introducing and promoting cultural arts from all provinces to local and international tourists.
Jakarta International Airport Manager worked with the Communication Forum for Liaison with the Provincial Government of All Indonesia (FORKAPPSI) to organize a cultural parade of the archipelago at this airport. The archipelago’s cultural parade is held at least once a week, displaying cultural arts in the form of traditional clothing, dances, and music.
4. Juanda International Airport
Meanwhile, on Thursday, July 27, 2022, Juanda International Airport (Surabaya Airport) hosted a cultural arts performance for the first time through the Reyog Ponorogo performance. The management of Juanda International Airport collaborated with the East Java Culture and Tourism Office to hold a Reyog performance that also promoted a series of Grebeg Suro and Ponorogo Regency Birthdays.
Later, East Java cultural arts performances will be held regularly at Juanda International Airport, with performers from 30 East Java cities or regencies.
These are the four Indonesian airports that host cultural arts performances. The Indonesian airports serve as art and cultural showcase, with artists and culturalists able to perform there. It also introduces and promotes Indonesian cultural arts to foreign and domestic tourists. In the future, not only the four airports, but all airports in Indonesia, will be able to host cultural arts performances.
